The topic of mental health on college campuses nationwide is one that continues to gain traction. There is a crisis surrounding our young people. In this episode, we speak with two CU seniors, Allie Reuter & Nick Kohler, who are actively working towards helping other students on campus who are going through really tough times. They share their insights about what it is like to be a campus leader and also navigate the issues of mental health that are prevalent in all aspects of higher education.
Allie Reuter is a senior at CU Boulder studying Integrative Physiology, Neuroscience, and leadership. Outside of the classroom, she serves as the chair of Active Minds which is a national non-profit organization committed to destigmatizing mental health. She has also spent time lobbying for policy change around health care for young adults with a non-profit called Young Invincibles. In addition to mental health work, Allie is deeply committed to service. She is the current service chair for the Presidents Leadership Class at CU, and she volunteers regularly at her local church on the side. Outside of CU, Allie is a board member for the YMCA of Northern Colorado, the vice chair of the Camp Santa Maria Council, and a member of the LEAD Colorado committee. She enjoys working with younger students to teach them leadership skills at a young age that will help them thrive in the years to come. In terms of future plans, Allie currently works at the hospital as a Newborn Hearing Screen Technician. She plans to pursue full time work as a medical assistant before hopefully matriculating into medical school. When she is not studying, Allie likes to travel, find new coffee shops, and go on long walks.
Nicholas Kohler is a fourth-year student from Los Angeles, CA, and majoring in Journalism with minors in Art History and Business. He is a member of the Herd Leadership Council in which he served as Vice President. He is also involved in Senior Class Council as the Journalism Lead and Cabinet Member, a voting member of the Volunteer Resource Center Board, a CMCI Ambassador, a writer for The Bold, and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Nicholas has interned at Known, formerly Stun Creative, Universal Music Publishing Group, and currently, Boulder Media House. In the past, he has participated in St. Baldricks and other charitable organizations as he continues to serve his community. He has a passion for sports and foresees himself joining the sports media field after he graduates.
