  • ISSS received an update that the local SSA in Louisville is open for walk in visits. Face masks are required. You may also call the Louisville office at 877-405-5872 weekdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to speak with a representative about scheduling an in-office appointment.
  • In addition, it is not advised to directly contact offices outside of the applicant’s jurisdiction. However, if an office has no availability, it would be appropriate to ask for assistance in locating an office that does.

Please note the following requirements for appointments:

  • Once an applicant secures an interview appointment, they must complete the paper Form SS-5 and bring it and the required supporting documentation to the interview.
  • SSA staff will conduct the mandatory face-to-face interview and make copies of the original documentation. SSA will take the applications at least 14 days (and preferably 30 days) prior to the expiration of documents.
  • The SSA office will process the documentation and mail a receipt to the applicant.  Within ten days, the SSN card should follow.
  • The SSA confirmed that applicants who are awaiting appointments can submit to their employers a completed Form SS-5.  Applicants should submit the receipt and their SSN to their employers as they become available.

Please call the Louisville office at 877-405-5872 weekdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to speak with a representative about scheduling an in-office appointment.

Students in F-1 status applying for Optional Practical Training are able to request a SSN on the Form I-765 which they submit to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Please continue to monitor the ISSS website as well as the Social Security Administration/Coronavirus website for updates.

Please note: CU Boulder employees do not need a valid social security number (SSN) in order to be put on payroll and to enroll in benefits. Pay will not be withheld during the SSN application processing period.  If employees are filling out enrollment applications for benefits and are requested to put in their SSNs,  it is best practice to leave the SSN field blank and ask the HR representative/personnel liaison to update it in the HCM system once the SSN is received.
