For a list of courses that are being offered that count towards IAFS requirements, please review the semester's list of courses. For IAFS course syllabi, visit our Syllabi page. Syllabi are subject to change each semester.
Each course completed for the major may fulfill only one requirement. For example, if a course is listed under a Functional Area (FA), a Geographic Concentration (GC), and/or an Off-Campus Experience (OCE), it can be used to fulfill only one of these requirements (FA, GC, or OCE).
A minimum course grade of C- or better is required for all courses. No Pass/Fail grades are permitted for major courses.
We encourage students to study abroad during their degree program. The Office of Education Abroad has information about scholarships and financial aid. The Global Grants Scholarship is a study abroad scholarship specific to International Affairs students studying abroad as part of their academic career. In addition to Education Abroad, there are many other unique opportunities to fulfill the Off-Campus Experience.
For information on transferring courses into CU Boulder and/or checking if they meet specific requirements:
Check Transferology to see if the course in question has already been reviewed. Over 140,000 courses have been reviewed and the details about how they will (or will not) transfer to CU Boulder are on this website. For instructions on how to create an account in Transferology, visit the Office of Admissions website under “create a Transferology account”.
In rare circumstances, IAFS may approve a substitute course outside the posted curriculum as an individual exception. An individual exception would be an appropriate Functional Area or Geographic Concentration course for the major, offered at CU Boulder. The request for an individual exception to the IAFS major must be submitted to the student's IAFS advisor no later than the end of the semester when the course is offered.
