Let’s Get Real: What if I’m not excited anymore?

It’s normal for your enthusiasm (or lack thereof) to vary throughout the semester. Traditionally, the month of October can be tough for most students to stay motivated. But, don’t worry! You are not alone. Here are some ways to stay engaged this month.

Spend time with your classmates and friends

A little social interaction can go a long way. Ask a classmate to grab coffee, take a walk or go to a campus event. Connecting with people who are going through the same thing can help you know you are not alone and provide a fun outlet to get to know each other outside of the classroom.

Mix it up

Try changing your study habits or daily routine to incorporate some other ways of learning the material. Take your notes to the Rec Center and read while you cycle. You could also explore campus to find a place to study outside (weather permitting, of course). Better yet, take a classmate with you and read your notes out loud to each other as a way of reinforcing the material.

Enjoy your favorite hobbies

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? If you enjoy working out, try a new fitness class at The Rec. If you like making things, check out the free Pinterest & Popcorn events. If you enjoy gaming, consider signing up for a tournament. Your favorite activities and interests outside of the classroom can be a great way to take a break, helping to relieve stress and stay motivated.

Talk it out

Having people you can talk to and a community to support you can help. If you are feeling uncertain or overwhelmed, reach out to a friend or loved one and talk about it. Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) offers the Let’s Talk program—free, informal and confidential consultations with a counselor at a variety of locations on campus. They can provide advice and guidance for your specific situation.

Still need ideas or inspiration, or still feel like you’re struggling? Schedule a check-in with your advisor. They are here to help you with every step of your educational journey!
