What to Bring for the Buffalo Bicycle Classic
By Tim Grassley
Whether you're tackling 100 miles, bouncing through a technical dirt segment, riding on Boulder’s picturesque trails or cruising another of our nine routes, the Elevations Credit Union Buffalo Bicycle Classic offers a ride for every cyclist. Preparation is key, so here's a quick list of essential gear to help you ride smart, stay safe and enjoy every mile.
1. The right bike for the right terrain
- The bike you have: We believe the bike you have is the best bike for the event. With nine routes of varying terrain and distances, we want you to choose based on what makes the best day specifically for you.
- Road routes of 75+ miles: A lightweight endurance or climbing bike with compact gearing will make long climbs, such as the Boulder Canyon or Carter Lake ascents, more manageable.
- Gravel adventurers: Opt for a gravel bike or hardtail mountain bike with wider, knobby tires (35–45mm) to maintain grip and control on loose or uneven trails.
2. Helmet
- Safety first—always. Choose a well-ventilated, MIPS-equipped helmet that fits snugly and comfortably for long hours in the saddle.
3. Layered apparel
- Jersey & bib shorts: Breathable, moisture-wicking materials are smart and prevent chafing. If you order before July 1, you can also snag a commemorative kit!
- Lightweight jacket: The Colorado high country in fall can surprise you with sudden rain or wind. A compact, waterproof (or water-resistant) jacket that stows easily in your jersey pocket will be your best friend should weather roll in.
- Arm or leg warmers: Great for chilly starts and easy to shed at an aid station as you warm up.
4. Footwear and gloves
- Cycling shoes: Road or gravel-specific shoes with stiff soles improve pedaling efficiency.
- Gloves: Padded gloves can help reduce fatigue and improve grip on long descents. For cyclist tacking the Switzerland Trail, gloves can also help with vibration and keep numbness at-bay.
5. Tire repair kit
Flats happen. So do dropped chains. Be prepared with:
- Spare tubes or tubeless plugs.
- Tire levers.
- CO₂ cartridges with regulator or a mini pump.
- Patch kit for emergencies.Storing your ID in here also ensures you’re set for the post-ride party.
6. Hydration and nutrition
- Two water bottles or a hydration pack.
- Energy bars, chews or electrolyte tablets. We recommend trying a few before the event to make sure your stomach handles the carbs ok.
- Note that our aid stations are incredibly well-stocked. Don’t be shy! Grab some bars or chews to-go and ensure you have a bit more energy to last longer spells between stations.
7. Navigation and tech
- A GPS bike computer or smartphone mount with downloaded maps can keep you from getting lost. We have our routes loaded on our event page on RideWithGPS.
- Strava also has a tracking beacon so your loved ones can follow your progress. Service in the mountains can be spotty, so you might warn those following along.
- Lights for early starts, road shoulders or cloudy conditions. A rear light is a very good idea. A front light is optional.
8. Saddle bag essentials
- Multi-tool with chain breaker.
- Cash or card for emergencies or rest stops.
9. Sunscreen and sunglasses
High-altitude UV exposure is no joke. Bring a small tube of sunscreen and sport-specific sunglasses to shield your eyes from sun, wind and debris.
10. Mental preparation
Not gear in the traditional sense—but invaluable. Know your route, pace yourself and enjoy the scenery. The Buffalo Bicycle Classic isn’t just a ride—it’s a celebration of perseverance and the beauty of Colorado, all for a tremendous cause.
Ride ready, ride smart and we’ll see you at the finish line.
