Engineering a Better Engineering

As one of the four pillars of our strategic vision, the College of Engineering and Applied Science aims to enrich our professional environment. This year, we want to build community through fun and educational opportunities with peers and coworkers. March 11-15, the college is launching its first Professional Community Week. Complement your Professional Community Week activities with related campus events throughout the month.

Monday, March 11

Enjoy coffee and doughnuts with Dean Bobby Braun in an open forum town hall where all questions are welcome.

We will watch a webinar from Dr. Kathy Obear on the role white allies can play in interrupting racism. Dr. Obear will visit our college the following week so that we can have a follow-up discussion with her. All are welcome to this follow-up conversation, which will be held on Monday, March 18,  3–4 p.m. in the Murray Reading Room, DLC 1B65.

This is an interactive, 90 minute discussion based on the Safe Zone curriculum developed by the American Society of Engineering Education’s Virtual Community of Practice for LGBTQ+ Equality.  Information to be provided will include a brief overview of terminology and current events relevant to the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. This session will differ from a standard Safe Zone training in that it will focus on specific situations and opportunities here in our own College of Engineering and Applied Science and participants will walk away with resources available on our campus.

Tuesday, March 12

Lauren Harris from CU Boulder's organization and employee development team will present.

We're kicking off St. Patrick's day early! Join your colleagues at the World Famous Dark Horse Bar and Grill, a Boulder institution. Wear green, bring your lucky charms and celebrate the season. Appetizers will be provided. Cash bar available.  2922 Baseline Road in Boulder.

Thursday, March 14

Join fellow CEAS faculty and staff as we revisit the key principles of successful Crucial Conversations. This course is designed for those who've completed the 16 hour training and would like to brush up their knowledge and skills.

In addition to pie, prizes will be awarded to the faculty, staff, and student who can name the most digits of Pi. Stop by for a chance to win.

Friday, March 15

Dr. Ashcraft and Dr. McLain will discuss the importance of male advocates and influencers and why they are critical for increasing diverse participation in technology.  They will share findings from NCWIT’s research on what motivates men to participate in advocacy, how men can and already are advocating for more inclusive workplace cultures, what arguments they use to persuade other men, how expanding gender norms benefits both women and men, and how to identify and engage more male advocates in these important efforts, as well as what pitfalls to avoid.

Step out of your lane and spend some spare time with your colleague for a friendly game of pins with pies. Pizza and soda provided. Billiards also available!
