CU Engineering Employee News & Resources - Oct. 1, 2024

The next College of Engineering and Applied Science New Staff Orientation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the Discovery Learning Center (DLC). This is a full-day, in-person orientation for staff who are new to the college and who have started their role since the last orientation on June 13. 

Invitations are forthcoming for all new CEAS staff members and those who were previously eligible but unable to attend a past orientation. For questions or more information, please contact angela.eberhardt@colorado.edu.           

The Master of Science in Data Science (MS-DS) program has moved to the College of Engineering and Applied Science, effective July 1. Brian Zaharatos has been named the program’s new director. More information can be found on the CU Boulder Graduate School webpage.

FY 2024-25 funding applications now open!
Funding of up to $500 per staff member per fiscal year is available on a first-come, first-served basis until all funds have been exhausted from the FY24-25 budget. Eligible activities include, but are not limited to, exam fees, training sessions, workshops and conferences. A 1:1 or greater cost share is expected from the staff member’s unit.

Applications are due Jan. 15
​If you plan to take an AY 2025-26, fall 2025, CY 2026 or spring 2026 sabbatical, please ensure your application is submitted to CEAS HR by the deadline. Please be aware that there is a new Sabbatical Application effective for this cycle, and sabbaticals will only be accepted if the correct application is submitted. Flu shots are free through most insurance plans, and faculty and staff can get their vaccine at various campus locations this fall. Vaccines are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and employees can register online for a time slot. All flu clinic participants will also receive a free cold care kit.

Get ready to celebrate fall with the 10th Annual CEAS HR Pumpkin Carving Contest! Take this opportunity to participate in the contest with some of your amazing colleagues or stop by during the event to cast your vote for the best pumpkin. 

Email ceashr@colorado.edu by Oct. 20 to sign up your team! Pumpkins will be judged in six categories: scariest, engineering themed, classic, funniest, CU themed, and best overall.

The College of Engineering and Applied Science is co-sponsoring a Plenary Session & Community Luncheon on Oct. 14 (registration required) and the “Land Back, Language Back” workshops and panel discussions on Oct. 16. We invite all faculty and staff to attend and learn about issues and priorities that matter to regional, national and international Native and Indigenous communities.

Randi Viola, Financial Services Manager - ATLAS
In recognition of her 18 years of dedicated service to the ATLAS Institute. Her unwavering commitment, hard work, and willingness to go above and beyond have had a profound and lasting impact on staff, faculty, and students alike. Randi’s exceptional contributions, particularly in stepping up to take on additional responsibilities this summer, have been essential to the success of ATLAS and the College.

Jacqueline Westhead, Office and Logistics Coordinator - NCWIT
For being an invaluable member of the NCWIT department, demonstrating efficiency, responsiveness, and a commitment to going above and beyond in support of colleagues and constituents. The exceptional handling of approximately 175 non employee travel expense reports for the NCWIT Summit on Women & IT ensured timely reimbursements, and flawless coordination of NCWIT’s office move was equally impressive.  

Ryan Toporcer, Program Operations Assistant - ITLP
Ryan displayed exceptional leadership and creativity in managing a team of summer interns for the ITL Program.  His leadership yielded incredible efficiency and productivity from the intern team, while he contributed individually at a high level and managed multiple projects. Ryan has received praise from multiple members of our team for his responsiveness, attention to detail, and customer-centric approach to his role, and his attitude and actions have fostered an organized and welcoming environment for all CEAS students. In Ryan's first year with the program, he has quickly become an invaluable member of our team.
