First-Year Experience, Graduate Intern Job Description

 

The College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) at the University of Colorado Boulder is one of the top ranked engineering schools in the nation and a dynamic community committed to improving the student experience. The First-Year Experience Graduate intern will assist in facilitating the overall design and coordination of FYE Programs and Student Success Initiatives in the College of Engineering and Applied Science

Working under the supervision of the Director of First-Year Experience in the College of Engineering and Applied Science and the First-Year Experience Coordinator, the Graduate Intern will implement student success initiatives and programming to facilitate first year undergraduate students’ transition and success.

Specifically, the Graduate Intern will assist within these areas of responsibility:

  • Researches, develops, and implements strategic initiatives and high impact practices to enhance the first year experience and create a positive transition into CEAS for new students.
  • Assists with designing and executing first-year programs within the College of Engineering and Applied Science such as college welcome days, outreach initiatives, summer programs, etc.
  • Facilitates and aids in student success initiatives such as early alert, leading academic success workshops, and other academic interventions.
  • Manages a team of lead peer mentors, leading biweekly meetings and supervising tasks
  • Collaborates with offices and departments across campus to enhance student success initiatives
  • Assists with the hiring, onboarding, training, and development of undergraduate student employees who serve as peer mentors to new students in CEAS
  • Possibility of academic coaching undergraduate students in the college

The duties of this position may change from time to time and/or are based on college need. Duties and responsibilities may be added or deleted at the discretion of the supervisor and/or the flow of the academic year.

Minimum Qualifications:

For consideration, candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • Actively enrolled in a Master's Program or PhD in higher education, education administration, student personnel administration, education, or a relared field.
  • Have an understanding of, and sensitivity to, transition concerns and obstacles faced by new students.
  • Have the ability to relate to students from a variety of backgrounds and abilities and a genuine desire to work with, mentor, and support students.
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver stellar presentations.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Full time Enrollment in a higher education or education Masters or PhD program
  • Experience working in a higher education setting or working with STEM students
  • Knowledge of student development theory, engagement, and high impact best practices in higher education
  • Knowledge of student program approaches, principles, and theories that strengthen resiliency factors for new students and develop support structures
  • Comfortable with public speaking, or desire to learn

 

Compensation:

  • This is a paid position with a one year commitment (July 2019- July 2020 *with the opportunity to begin earlier than July 2019*)
  • Flexible during the academic year (possibility to design your own working hours).
  • Pay range is $18-$25 per hour commensurate with experience, with up to 20 hours possible a week
    • Hours may fluctuate during “busy” times, such a new student welcome days
