A professor in the Department of Communication, Karen Lee Ashcraft serves as CMCI’s first associate dean of diversity, equity and inclusion.
For the past 25 years, her research and teaching have addressed such issues as gender, race, sexuality, and class in workplace contexts. Ashcraft joined the college leadership team in the summer of 2018 and is excited to bring her passionate expertise on these matters to her own workplace!
An instructor in the Department of Communication, Ruth Hickerson serves as the Director of Pathways to Excellence, our summer bridge program for selected incoming first-year students.
She has spent 20 years working to improve the higher education experience for all students, both as an administrator and a faculty member. Hickerson is especially interested in retention and persistence among first-generation students, students with learning differences, non-traditional students, students experiencing economic hardship, and students otherwise underrepresented on campus.
Our Coordinator of Inclusive Excellence and Outreach, David Martinez, has been devoted to enhancing diversity in the college long before it became CMCI.
He began 28 years ago, in the former School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Martinez cultivates student success by facilitating strong relationships with our students, alumni, faculty, and staff, and by bringing people together as needs and opportunities arise. For his commitment to inclusive excellence and community building, he received the President’s Diversity Award in 2013.
