Despite a little error of birthplace, you remade yourself as a leading Westerner. You have committed your always replenished energy to the most important cause of the twenty-first-century West: the repair and restoration of injured and diminished landscapes and habitats. You have engaged the region and the nation in global matters, from our shared responsibility for the planet’s atmosphere to a long overdue reckoning with human population growth. In your empathy for human sorrow and your unending efforts to reduce the chance that human beings will suffer the violence of war, you set the model of the West, in Wallace Stegner’s phrase, as “the native home of hope.”
