CTL Newsletter - April 2023

CU Boulder campus in Spring

Feeling a little tired at this time of the semester?

Reenergize your enthusiasm and finish strong! Students often identify enthusiasm—or being “passionate” about a subject—as being the distinguishing characteristic of a good professor. The correlation between an instructor’s enthusiasm and its effect on student engagement nearly forms an axiom: students become increasingly engaged with a course and its material to the degree that a faculty member is engaged and enthused by the subject matter. Learn more about the importance of Enthusiasm & Teaching.

Call for CTL/ASSETT Faculty Fellows is now open!

The Center for Teaching and Learning and ASSETT are pleased to announce the call for our campus-wide Faculty Fellows program! Apply to be a part of this unique, interdisciplinary cohort of colleagues engaging in critical inquiry around teaching topics such as course design, active learning, inclusive teaching, teaching assessments, teaching with technology, artificial intelligence and other topics of interest. Applications will be accepted through May 15, 2023.

Applications for JET Fall '23 cohort are now open!

The Just & Equitable Teaching (JET) Program brings together educators from the CU Boulder community to provide professional development in social justice and equity in the classroom. The goal of this program is to equip instructors with evidence-based resources and practices to co-create inclusive learning environments. Delivered through a social justice framework, participants engage in self-reflection, dialogue, workshops, mentoring, and equitable course design activities. As participants become critically conscious of what contributes to inequitable learning opportunities, they will be encouraged to develop their commitment to anti-discriminatory teaching strategies. The Fall '23 cohort runs from Sept. 14 thru Nov. 20. Applications are due May 19.

Save the date!

Pause for a Poem

Laura Riding, “The Troubles of a Book”

The trouble of a book is thirdly
to speak its sermon, then look the other way,
Arouse commotion in the margin,
Where tongue meets the eye,

. . . . .

The ordeal of a book is to give no hint
Of ordeal, to be flat and witless
Of the upright sense of print
