The IEC welcomes workshop requests, both on topics we’ve addressed in previous sessions or on other subjects that would benefit folks on campus. Here’s a list of some of the workshops that the Center has created and presented to faculty, staff, and students:

Fostering International Student Agency and Inclusion Through Mentoring & Engagement

This session explores strategies for fostering international student agency and inclusion through mentoring and engagement. Attendees will both gain and share actionable approaches to empower students in navigating cultural and academic challenges. Key themes include effective mentoring models, cultural competency, and community-building initiatives that create a supportive environment for all learners to thrive.

The Hidden Curriculum

This workshop series explores the implicit norms and expectations that are not formally communicated to university students, with an aim of working toward greater equity in higher education.

Inclusive Communication – Maximizing Connections with International Students

Applying the principles of intercultural communication, this session explores the rationale behind the need to adapt communication styles to better interact with international students in both oral and written contexts. Attendees gain a better understanding of cultural orientations through reflection on their own communication styles to maximize effective communication with their international advisees. 

Asking and Answering Questions

This workshop is designed to help international graduate students navigate the US academic culture of classroom participation, specifically through asking and answering questions. Tailored for graduate students serving or preparing to serve as Teaching Assistants (TAs), the session will cover strategies for fielding student questions, providing appropriate responses, and asking insightful questions and follow-up questions to gauge student comprehension.

Self-Editing in Academic Writing

In this interactive workshop, attendees master self-editing strategies for academic work. The workshop will address how to identify and correct common grammatical errors, achieve greater clarity and coherence in writing, tailor writing to meet academic standards, and use tools and techniques for effective revisions. 

Confident Conversations
This series of free workshops for international graduate students at CU Boulder are designed to help participants build confidence in professional communication. Sessions include Breaking the Ice with Small Talk, Keeping the Conversation Going, Delivering Your Personal Pitch, and Recognizing Your Peers: Offering condolences, congratulations, and compliments.
In every session, participants learn and practice strategies for interacting with ease in a professional setting.  
Bridging Borders: Supporting International Students & Embracing Global Perspectives

Discover how to foster inclusive environments that empower international students and enrich your campus with global perspectives. You’ll gain practical tools, cultural insights, and strategies to support diverse learners while fostering a more globally minded community. This interactive session includes collaborative discussions and is open to all educators, staff, and students. Food and drinks will be served. Registration is required to attend this event. Come celebrate International Students Day at CU Boulder as a community!
