Proficiency for Teaching
CU students can earn a Colorado secondary teaching license to teach one of several world languages through CU's Department of Education's Teaching Licensure program. CU students pursuing a world languages teaching licensure typically major in the world language they wish to teach, and should apply to a study abroad program offered through the CU Study Abroad Office to gain maximum exposure to and practice with their chosen language.
World language teaching licensure candidates should consider joining two important professional organizations: the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers (CCFLT) and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), so as to have access to their publications and conferences.
Candidates for secondary teaching licensure for Spanish, French and Japanese must pass the PRAXIS exam in their language as one of the requirements for Licensure, and on the PRAXIS exam they must demonstrate that they read, speak, write and listen at an "Advanced Low" proficiency level. For information about required proficiency levels and and practice for the oral proficiency section of the exam or other assessments that measure oral proficiency, please select the language you wish to teach.
