Visiting Artist Lecture Series
Jules Allen
Monday, September 29th at 4:00 PM
Visual Arts Complex auditorium, 1B20
Jules Allen’s photographs, spanning over four decades, communicate the essential truth that a culture’s power is most evident when it is presented on its own terms—evoking the contemporary American experience. His images place subjects, drawn from the richness of urban Black life, within universal paradigms.
Allen has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions across the country and has participated in group shows at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, The Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Studio Museum of Harlem in New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Jackie Gendel
Monday, October 6th at 4:00 PM
Visual Arts Complex auditorium, 1B20
Much of Jackie Gendel’s recent work challenges and contradicts two of modernity’s most common conventions of image production: serial repetition of form and the sequential image of narrative. She employs both techniques simultaneously to explore the implied relationship between narrative time and painterly process. Gendel’s early work drew from her background in underground comics, a medium known for "sequential image" storytelling. In the late '90s, she created comics for an upstart feminist webzine aimed at teenage girls.
Her recent solo exhibitions include shows at the Jeff Bailey Gallery, Loyal Gallery in Malmö, Sweden, and the Bryan Miller Gallery. Her work has been featured in Art in America, Artforum, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. In 2007, Gendel was honored with an Academy Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
