How art can mobilize ‘preventive publics’ against barbarism

Mark Amerika, Professor of Distinction
Professor Mark Amerika's second solo exhibition in Europe this year is titled "Abducted Realities." For this exhibition, Mark has created a site-specific installation in the center of Porto, Portugal, at the historic Reitoria building. The show features digital animations made in collaboration with AI, a series of conceptual microfictions, and the video performance of his 3D avatar aka The ACI [artificial creative intelligence].
This exhibition runs from April 17 - May 13, 2023, and follows the successful opening of Mark's exhibition "Mark Amerika. Remixing Reality. 1993-2023" at the renowned Marlborough Barcelona art gallery in Spain, also open until May 13.

Shallowater Communion: M12’s “The Tap”
At first glance, The Tap fits seamlessly into the farm which surrounds it. The work lives in a small silo high on the Llano Estacado, a few miles outside Lubbock in Shallowater, Texas. The metal walls are rusted, the floor is bare concrete. The structure creaks and rattles with the wind or sun or rain. At the center of the silo stands a polished brass water tap, about waist-high, plumbed directly into the underlying Ogallala Aquifer.
