Museum Of Contemporary Art Denver Showcases Artists As Citizens

“It is the idea that citizenship is an ongoing exercise, much like an artistic practice, that defines these works and the ‘citizen-artists’ who made them,” exhibition curator and MCA Denver Assistant Curator Zoe Larkins said when announcing the show.

The exhibit features five new commissions approaching issues that have become more pressing this year: voter registration, native lands, access to information, legislation on citizenship and human connection. One of these, “Property Rights” by Yumi Janairo Roth, is the artist’s exploration of how our image of public land and the American West is built, maintained, accessed, controlled and delineated.

Roth was also featured in 303 Magazine as a Denver artists to watch in 2021

"Nobody knows exactly what 2021 will bring, but when it comes to the Denver art scene, we do have a good idea of who will be creating can’t-miss work next year. As 2020 comes to an end, we’ve rounded up a list of 12 Colorado creators to keep up with in 2021."

A Companion to Contemporary Drawing

Marina Kassianidou, Painting and Drawing

Assistant Professor, Marina Kassianidou contributed an essay to the book A Companion to Contemporary Drawing, edited by Kelly Chorpening and Rebecca Fortnum and published by Wiley Blackwell as part of the Wiley Blackwell Companions to Art History series.

The book explores how 20th and 21st century artists have used drawing to understand and comment on the world. Presenting contributions by both theorists and practitioners, this book considers the place, space, and history of drawing and explores shifts in attitudes towards its practice over the years.

Mikey Yates in his studio

Mikey Yates, Painting & Drawing MFA Candidate

Taymour Grahne Projects present Home Clothes, an online solo exhibition by Boulder, Colorado-based Filipino American artist Mikey Yates
Opening virtually on December 8, 2020.

Taymour Grahne Projects

This year, Mikey had to close his studio at the University of Colorado due to COVID-19, and self-isolate at home. Most of the works featured in this online solo were made during quarantine and started in the artist’s 10 ft x 10 ft garage in Colorado. Mikey left behind the paintings he had in progress and slowly started making new work on a smaller scale to fit this space. These multi-figural compositions show the impact of the pandemic on everyday family life. Seeing this year as an extended pause to normality, Mikey comments on routine, the experience of sharing small spaces with others and the contrasts of inside and outside.
