Artistic Art Histories (in Southeast Asia)

About the lecture: What kinds of knowledge and understanding are engendered when contemporary artists engage, in their artwork, with overlooked histories of (post)colonial modern art? How do their practices—which I call artistic art histories—contribute to the ongoing decolonization of the discipline of art history?

Roger Nelson is an art historian and curator, currently Assistant Professor of Art History in the School of Humanities at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was the 2022 recipient of the A.L. Becker Southeast Asian Literature in Translation Prize. His current book project considers artistic art histories in Southeast Asia. He is co-founding co-editor of Southeast of Now: Directions in Contemporary and Modern Art in Asia, a scholarly journal published by NUS Press. 

Garrett Bryant is a transdisciplinary artist with a background in fabrication and digital media. Garrett supervises the woodshop and digital fabrication studios. He joined the department after working as an exhibition fabricator at the Denver Art Museum. Prior to the DAM, he taught art classes at the University of Northern Colorado and Syracuse University. He is also a practicing artist, based out of Denver, and has exhibited in New York City, and London, UK.

Garrett graduated from the University of Montana with a BA in Studio Art and has an MFA in Studio Art from Syracuse University. Before transitioning into the arts, Garrett spent his early adulthood trying to become a professional whitewater kayaker. He still enjoys the outdoors, but these days he would prefer to discuss critical theory and the importance of culture workers to a society.

Corrina is a Denver-based artist and curator with a profound interest in the intersection of art and technology. She holds a BFA in Sculpture from Metropolitan State University and an MFA in Integrated Art from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Her creative practice merges art and science, employing new media technology to explore innovative forms of expression. Corrina often uses custom circuitry to create vibrant colorful light-up, interactive, and kinetic art pieces.

An enthusiast of robotic, glitch, video, and conceptual art, she has recently developed a keen interest in virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) and is now exploring bleeding-edge techniques to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into her art processes. Drawing inspiration from poetry and literature, she creates visual narratives that range from darkly humorous to whimsically lighthearted, exploring the absurdities of human experience.

In addition to her studio practice, Corrina has spent the past decade organizing art exhibitions in Denver with a focus on diversity, community engagement and inclusivity. As the founder and director of Denver Digital Land Grab, she and her team are dedicated to fostering equity within the Denver art scene by repurposing the digital space across the city for local artists through open call exhibitions and other art-related happenings.

Corrina is teaching Digital Art 1, Digital Art 2 and AI Remix Culture for the Fall and in the Spring, her courses will focus on Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and AI Video.
