Artist Statement

Growing up in a heavily scientific household, I have always valued science and medicine for their contributions to humankind. However, on a personal level, I have difficulty connecting the research and representation of the human body in the medical field with the actual experience of existing in my body. In my work, I explore this gap between how food and fat bodies are discussed and depicted and the emotional side of eating and living. Using printmaking, I am able to reproduce scientific images on fabric to create a dialogue between the scientific observations and abstracted or convoluted body parts. Through fabric and quilting, I am able to create dimension and shape in my work to reflect the physicality of my body while retaining the soft squishable feeling of body fat.
