Katherine Deck-Portillo

Katherine Deck-Portillo is an art historian, writer, and educator specializing in contemporary art through decolonial practices. She holds a Master of Arts in Art History from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a Bachelor of Arts from Wittenberg University. Katherine is the founder of Viva Arte, a digital platform dedicated to supporting local artists and writers. Her research explores Chicanxfuturism and ethnic futurisms more broadly, examining how artists across diverse backgrounds use speculative narratives to challenge colonial structures. She is currently working on an essay for publication in the sequel to Altermundos: Latin@ Speculative Literature, Film, and Popular Culture. As a Senior Lecturer at UTSA, Katherine’s work focuses on decolonizing art history and making it accessible to diverse audiences through innovative pedagogical approaches.
