Alice Neild
Artist Statement
Exploring themes of childhood, nostalgia, and growing old allows me to process leaving behind the simplicity of childhood in exchange for the more complex experiences of adulthood. Vulnerability, maturity, and innocence come face-to-face in my work. I examine how it feels to become a woman in America today and how this has affected my view of my youth and future. Using childhood drawings as source material allows me to collaborate with my younger self and create compositions that transcend time. I also look at signs of aging and decay — the tangible degradation that takes place. I examine how an object can be broken down by the expression of love and affection through repeated touch. As I journey towards accepting mortality, I explore forms of memory loss and the resulting deterioration of identity. I capture the fragility of our memories, our relationships, and our lives.
