The Fulbright Program for U.S. Students
What is the Fulbright Program?
Established in 1946 to increase empathy and understanding between cultures, the Fulbright Program awards thousands of grants and scholarships each year, offering opportunities for advanced research, teaching and study in more than 135 countries worldwide.
If you are a U.S. Citizen, who has, or will have their bachelor’s degree by the beginning date of the grant, you have the opportunity to study, conduct research, or teach English abroad as a Fulbright recipient. All Fulbright grants provide the funds for travel to your host country, a small research/book allowance, and medical insurance, and some include other benefits.
How Do I Apply?
All students must apply through the Office of International Education (OIE), who are available to assist you with your application.

- Current CU-Boulder students who wish to apply for a Fulbright must apply through OIE.
- OIE is also available to assist alumni with their applications.
- OIE provides extensive advising for our Fulbright applicants, but it is up to you to contact them early so you can maximize this benefit.

What Can I Do as a Fulbright Student?
10 CU-Boulder students received Fulbright grants to study abroad for the 2011-2012 academic year, to countries such as Tajikistan, Macau, Germany, Sweden, India, Bulgaria, Mexico and Indonesia. They will be studying such diverse subjects as Swedish folk music, ethnographic research on women’s educational opportunities in India, plant-soil-microbe interactions to enhance crop performance, and the endangered Kula language, while others will travel to pursue English teaching assistantships.
WGST graduate Eliza Williamson traveled to Argentina on a Fulbright research grant, to conduct an ethnographic study of a maternity hospital that takes a woman-centered approach to perinatal care.
