The CU Boulder Connection
Solid Power was established with the mission to revolutionize batteries. The company was founded in collaboration with CU Boulder in 2017, with an exclusive licensing agreement on university-owned Intellectual Property (IP) from the visionary work of associate professors Conrad Stoldt and Se-Hee Lee (Mechanical Engineering), with support from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Aiming to double rechargeable battery energy density, Solid Power secured several million dollars in grant funding, including federal grants from agencies like the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA-E), Air Force and Department of Energy (DOE) and an investment round led by BMW, Ford and Volta Technologies before Solid Power went public in 2021.
