Theories and Practices of College Writing Instruction, Dr. Laurie Gries

This course introduces you to a wide range of writing theories, practices, and pedagogies. While readings are grounded in the discipline of rhetoric and composition/writing studies, this course aims to help you imagine and invent different ways of teaching writing across diverse contexts at the university level. You can expect to walk away with theories to inform your pedagogical rationale but also practical skills for putting those theories into practice in the classroom. To assist in this learning, you will practice designing and implementing daily heuristics as well as designing a course of your choice that puts writing education front and center no matter the content focus. Whether you think of writing as a craft, a philosophical exercise, an act of civic engagement, a vehicle for criticism and interpretation, or a means of cultural expression, you will also have the opportunity to develop a philosophy for teaching writing in your discipline. The goal of all these activities is to not only help you develop expertise in college writing instruction but also develop a deeper understanding of writing itself.
