marianne reddan and tor wagerCU Psychology and Neuroscience graduate student Marianne Reddan (Cognitive) and Professor Tor Wager (Cognitive) were in the news, with an article in CU Boulder Today and the Daily Camera about a recent publication in the journal Neuron. The brain-imaging research demonstrated the power of the imagination, such that participants who, after being conditioned to a noxious auditory stimulus, were able to extinguish their response to this stimulus by simply imagining the stimulus during the extinction phase. Moreover, the patterns of brain activity during that phase were very similar to those participants who continued to hear the tone during the extinction phase. These results did not hold for participants who were asked to imagine a pleasant sound during this phase.
