Regular exercise can lead to better sleep, positive moods, lower stress levels, improved cognitive function and better overall health - all components that help your student in their academic success at CU Boulder. Fitness experts from the CU Rec Center offer different perspectives on exercise and suggestions to help your student find what works for them. Share these ideas with your student to start the conversation about maintaining their physical wellness during the school year.

Getting involved and trying new things

Many forms of exercise can become opportunities to find community and get involved on campus. Does your student enjoy rock climbing, hiking or backpacking? They can find likeminded people through the Rec’s Outdoor Program. Did your student play on a sports team in high school? Encourage them to join an intramural or sports club team. Does your student like to dance? They can register for instruction classes and learn with other dance enthusiasts. Additionally, encourage your student to explore and try new activities, like the climbing wall, ice-skating or a new fitness class. Opening themselves up to new experiences and overcoming challenges can lead to increased self-esteem, more friends and potentially a new healthy hobby.

Managing stress

Many students experience stress at some point during their semester, and exercise is a healthy and productive way to help relieve stress and improve their physical and mental health. Stress management techniques, like exercise, are different for everyone. While some students enjoy yoga or guided meditation to help relieve stress, others may prefer running or an intense game of basketball. Some students choose to exercise by themselves or with friends, while others like group fitness classes or small group training with their peers. Encourage your student to try different types of exercise to find what works for them.

Strategies for when your student is short on time

One of the biggest challenges when it comes to exercising regularly is finding time. With balancing coursework, social activities, employment or other aspects in the busy life of a college student, exercise can often be put on the back burner. To help squeeze some physical activity into a busy day, encourage your student to look for small opportunities when they are not able to make it to the Rec Center: they could ride their bike instead of taking the bus, choose a longer route for their walk to class or commit to taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

Regular exercise is a habit that will serve your student well beyond their college years. It also goes hand-in-hand with other healthy habits, like nutrition. Students can learn how to take care of themselves and develop these habits through many services at the Rec, and ensure they are physically, mentally and emotionally well during their time at CU Boulder.
