An individual may want to access a medical exam to preserve evidence following a sexual assault. The Sex Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program at the Emergency Department at Boulder Community Health Foothills Hospital is available to conduct a SANE exam, ideally within five days of the sexual assault.

It is best to not bathe, shower, eat, drink, douche, or change clothes before a SANE. However, evidence can still be collected even if any or all of these things have been done. If some or all of this evidence is unavailable or does not exist, reporting a sexual assault to law enforcement and/or OIEC is still encouraged. The lack of evidence does not preclude an investigation from taking place.

Please contact the Office of Victim Assistance (OVA) at 303-492-8855 to confidentially discuss any of your medical or reporting options.

Individuals can receive a forensic/SANE without first talking to the university or a confidential resource by calling the police directly and telling the dispatcher that they want to report a sexual assault and would like to preserve evidence. The police can provide transportation to the hospital. An individual can also undergo a SANE without police involvement by going directly to Boulder Community Health Foothills Hospital and requesting a SANE. Wardenburg provides travel vouchers during business hours to Foothills Hospital.
