Upcoming MCDB Thesis Defenses:
- April 2: Lily Nguyen, “TBD.” Advisor: Edward Chuong, Ph.D. and Benjamin Bitler, Ph.D.
April 2 @ 4:00pm – BioFrontiers Special Seminar, Sponsored by EMPOWERS & CU Café @ JSCBB A104:
- Anand Varma, Award-Winning Science Photographer, National Geographic Explorer, Founder of the WonderLab
- Bio: In Anand Varma’s hands, a camera is not just a tool to capture what he sees—it’s a way to illuminate the layers of beauty and complexity that are otherwise hidden from view. Armed with a degree in integrative biology, he has devoted years of his life to developing innovative techniques—even building some of his own equipment—to create intimate, dramatic and surprising images of nature. His ultimate goal: to spark a sense of wonder about our world. Through his work, Anand highlights creatures whose incredible details typically go unseen, and discovers new stories behind the science along the way. From the secret life cycle of the honeybee to the lightning-fast behaviors of hummingbirds, his images slow down the fast, speed up the slow and magnify the miniature to reveal life at the edge of our perception. He is a National Geographic Explorer and award-winning photographer based in Berkeley, California.
- Host: Tom Cech, Ph.D.
April 4 @ 4:00pm – Rose M. Litman Memorial Lecture in Science @ Chancellor’s Hall & Auditorium, CASE 4th Floor:
April 4 @ 5:30pm – Artists Talk! @ UMC Aspen Rooms:
April 9 @ 4:00pm – BioFrontiers Special Seminar, Sponsored by EMPOWERS & CU Café @ JSCBB A115 Butcher Auditorium:
- Blanton Tolbert, RNA Biochemist/Biophysicist at U Penn & HHMI VP of Science Leadership and Culture
- Bio: Tolbert leads HHMI’s Center for the Advancement of Science Leadership and Culture where he directs a portfolio of current and new programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, an initiative to better equip HHMI scientists to provide culturally aware mentorship, a curriculum to grow scientists’ skills to maintain inclusive environments, and activities to develop strategic equity-centered initiatives and partnerships. Tolbert is also a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at University of Pennsylvania. The research in the Tolbert group focuses on the biochemical mechanisms by which RNA viruses replicate within the cellular environment. His group leverages their fundamental understanding of the molecular biology of these viruses to identify novel targets for therapeutic intervention. The team has collaborated with colleagues to develop compounds with the potential to delay or halt the replication of SARS-CoV-2 and EV-A71
- Host: Tom Cech, Ph.D.
