Fall 2022 Application Process and Timeline
Before the housing application can be accessed, you will need to pay the $200 confirmation deposit to Admissions and confirm your IdentiKey security credentials. Please plan accordingly (confirm by May 1) as this process can take up to 3-5 business days and deadlines are firm.
Transfer students are not considered first-year students. Transfer students can apply for campus housing via the Apartment Style housing application, and transfer students are eligible to live off campus. The Off Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations office can assist with all the off campus housing needs.
Applications will start being accepted on March 1, including the payment of the $250 security deposit and $50 non-refundable application fee.
First-year students should review the residence hall application process to understand next steps and the timeline. The application will be in the MyCULiving housing portal. Students must first confirm their admission to CU and set IdentiKey security credentials before gaining access to the application. Please plan accordingly (confirm by May 1) as this process can take up to 3-5 business days and deadlines are firm.

All first-year students may apply at any point for housing between March 1 and the closing of the housing application on May 6. We have created our timeline to give our students and families as much notice to our deadlines so they can make their decisions. We also communicate the timeline in emails and on our website. In order for us to have a fair and timely process, it is the student’s responsibility to meet all deadlines. Our deadlines are firm and unfortunately, exceptions will not be made if a deadline is missed.
We certainly do understand that students may be making decisions amongst many institutions, and we want you to choose the university that is the best fit for you. We hope you choose CU Boulder! If you apply for housing now and make a decision not to attend CU, you will need to cancel your housing application by May 6, 2022, and we will refund your $250 housing deposit. Additionally, confirming to CU by May 1 should allow you to complete your application by the May 6 deadline.
CU Boulder Disability Services reviews requests for housing and dining accommodations for students with documented disability-related needs, on a case-by-case individualized basis. If you feel you require a housing or dining accommodation, please submit your request to Disability Services as soon as possible and preferably as soon as you have submitted your application to University Housing. Please do not rely on your preferences in the University Housing application to ensure your needs are met. For instructions to request a housing or dining accommodation, please visit CU Disability Services Housing and Dining Accommodations.
Please refer to our timeline to know when processes will be offered and when to expect assignment communication.
All applications are randomly assigned based on preferences and availability and not assigned by application date. All preferences were considered in the assignment process and if the space was available, you were assigned. If you were assigned to a lower preference, it is because your higher preferences didn’t have vacancies. If none of your preferences were available, you were assigned to our next best Traditional Experience option.
There is a Housing Change Process that runs between June 2-June 8 and July 15-19. Room change requests prior to move-in will only be considered through this time frame. Hall changes through this process are considered by randomly selecting students with requests based on preferences, eligibility, and availability. University Housing will re-assign students to a new space if they are selected in the process. University Housing tries to accommodate as many requests as possible, however, participation in the Housing Change Processes does not guarantee a room change. Decisions will be released June 14 and July 25. If you do not receive a change, you will be able to apply for the housing waitlist that opens on August 24 at 9 a.m. MT.
You were only assigned to the RAP if you selected it in your preferences, and signed the RAP agreement form. It is important to review the Living Experiences to understand what you are preferencing in your application. Most RAPs are part of the entire building, and if so, you will be required to participate in the RAP if you live in that building. If you were placed in a RAP but are not interested, you will need to go through the assignment change process to change halls.
- We recommend that you work with your intended roommate to decide how to best proceed. Some things to consider are that only one of you should submit a Housing Change Request in order to work to be placed in the same building and room type.
- You can also consider submitting a request to both move to a new building where there may be more space. For example, many of our RAPs are quite popular, and it can be more challenging to complete a change request into those buildings, but buildings that are fully traditional housing can give you a better chance of having your request completed.
- Lastly, if you and your intended roommate have a different major or are in a different college, you may not be eligible for the same experiences or buildings. Review our eligibility chart to determine which buildings you are both eligible to submit as preferences.
Fall 2022 Living Options
Where you live is important, but who you live with and your experiences are even more important! Please review our website for more information on our living experiences. We have many housing experiences to choose from that span our 2 mile campus and 3 campus living neighborhoods.
Our campus housing offers three types of living experiences for our students. Please see more information on each housing experience below.
Traditional - Our traditional experience is available to all students. It is composed of students from different academic majors and interests. The community and events offered will organically develop based on the students who live there. This is a great community for the student who wants to have a home environment that is not based on their academics and they can live with people who they likely are not meeting in classes.
Living Learning Communities (LLCs) - Our LLC experiences are cohorts of students that live and learn together around a specific topic. LLCs have eligibility requirements to live in the community, and LLC offerings are both academic and theme based. Some LLCs offer classes, and others have co-curricular experiences built into the residential experience. This is a great community for students who are passionate about living and learning with other like-minded students around a specific topical area.
Residential Academic Programs (RAPs) - Our RAP experiences are based on academic interests and have eligibility requirements to live in the community. Students will live amongst other students within the same college or major. Most of our halls with RAPs do require all residents to participate in the RAP (unless LLC or Traditional Experiences are also offered in a hall), activities based on the theme of the RAP and take one RAP class per semester to live there. In addition, there is a $425 RAP fee.
Residential Academic Programs (RAPs) and Living Learning Communities (LLCs) introduce students to a community of other students with similar interests and academic goals. RAPs and LLCs offer various types of programming and class offerings, and students will develop friendships, gain important life skills and get a deeper and more fulfilling residence hall environment. RAPs have a $425 fee associated with them and require participation in classes offered within the residence hall environment. LLCs (generally) do not have an associated fee and instead provide residential programmatic opportunities and some provide classes with no additional fee to the student.
We offer three identity based living learning communities in Hallett Hall. These communities were created on the request of our students, and all communities are committed to furthering social justice. If you are interested in living within the Black Students and Allies LLC, Multicultural and Latinx LLC or the LGBTQIA and Allies LLC, please choose the specific LLCs on your housing application as a preference and we will reach out to you with the link for the essay.

Fall room and board charges are applied to the student tuition and fees account by early August. Spring room and board charges are applied to the the student tuition and fees account by early January. They are a package price and not separated. All first-year students and those assigned to the residence halls are required to have a meal plan.
For the 2022-23 academic year we will have limited Apartment Style campus housing for transfer students. Additionally, we have a robust off campus community composed mostly of sophomore and beyond students; therefore, we strongly encourage transfer students to work with Off Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations and to review Ralphie’s List to consider off-campus housing options.
First-year students and any student assigned to a residence hall are required to carry a meal plan. Non first-year students may have additional options as well. All meal plan options will be updated shortly and selected as a preference in the housing application. Changes to your meal plan preference can be made in the application until May 6. Requests for changes after this date will need to be in writing and emailed to universityhousing@colorado.edu.
Should a first-year student wish to be released from living within campus housing, they may petition for an exemption to the live-on requirement by submitting the Freshman Release form in the MyCULiving portal. Students will not be released from the live-on requirement to move off campus (to live in an off-campus apartment by themselves or to live within sorority/fraternity house, for example).
Students who are under 18 years of age at the time of contract submission must complete the Guardian Consent Form to apply for housing. The Guardian Consent Form is available in the housing application in the MyCULiving portal. The Guardian Consent Form must be submitted within 3 days of completing the housing application. Your application is considered incomplete until this form has been received and accepted.
It is important to understand that the residence hall environment expects an adult level of responsibility. Students are expected to be able to study and live independently and get along with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. It should also be known that the student will be assigned to any eligible housing and accommodations/exceptions are not made due to the age of the student. The rules and regulations of living in the residence halls can be found in the Residence Hall Handbook and within the Housing Contract.
