CU Linguistics Associate Professor Chase Raymond has recently accepted a secondary appointment in the Department of Family Medicine, at the University of Colorado, Anschutz School of Medicine. He is the first linguist to hold such an appointment. This joint appointment will facilitate a range of research projects on patient-provider communication, as well as the development of communication-focused modules/workshops for medical students and health science researchers. Prof. Raymond is currently working with CU Anschutz colleagues on a project funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), concerning weight management in primary medical care consultation. Called ‘PATHWEIGH’, the project is described here: PATHWEIGH, Pragmatic weight management in adult patients in primary care in Colorado, USA: Study protocol for a stepped wedge cluster randomized trial (Suresh, et al., 2022, in Trials). Beyond CU Anschutz, Prof. Raymond is working with Profs. Ana Cristina Ostermann (UNISINOS, Brazil) and Paul Drew (University of York, UK) to examine obstetric and gynecological consultations with low-SES patients in Brazil.
