On Tuesday, February 18, at 6pm, CU linguists assembled in the CASE auditorium for a talk by Game of Thrones Language Creator David J. Peterson. In addition to creating the Dothraki and High Valyrian languages for HBO’s medieval fantasy epic Game of Thrones, he has created languages for Syfy’s Defiance, Netflix’s Bright, the CW’s The 100, Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, Netflix’s The Witcher, Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World, and others. He is also the author of Living Language Dothraki and The Art of Language Invention. What some may not know is that David has a strong background in academic linguistics, having earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Linguistics from UC Berkeley in 2003, and a Master’s degree in Linguistics from UC San Diego in 2005, receiving UCSD's 2016 Emerging Leader Award. He’s also been creating languages since 2000. He served as a cofounder and original board member of the Language Creation Society, and served as its president from 2011 to 2014. His humor, insights and remarkably tales of working with show business talent have enraptured audiences around the country. David's talk, jointly sponsored by the CU Linguistics Undergrad Club and CU Linguistics, will take place in CU's beautiful new CASE building. Enjoy a catered reception after the talk in the Chancellor's Auditorim and a beautiful Flatirons view from the terrace. See where a linguistics degree can take you!
