Alligator clips at the end of a modified extension cord are attached to the handles of two forks, which are inserted near the ends of a large pickle. When the cord is plugged in, the pickle sparks and glows.

Pickle, lit up

To Conduct Demonstration:

1. Make sure the apparatus is unplugged.

2. Place a large dill pickle on absorbant paper or a pile of paper towels.

3. Stick the tines of the two forks into the pickle on each end so that the handles are parallel to each other but perpendicular to the pickle.

4. Connect one alligator clip to each fork handle. Plug the cord into an electrical outlet.

5. Turn the lights off. The pickle will begin to glow after a few seconds. Unplug after the pickle has glowed for 5-10 seconds.

Safety:

Care should be taken to avoid touching any part of the apparatus while it is plugged in.
