Independence Day Trivia: Test Your Knowledge!
On Tuesday, July 4, 2023, Americans will gather with family, friends, and their communities to celebrate the holiday of Independence Day. How much do you know about this important day in American history?
True or false?
False. The Declaration of Independence was actually drafted on July 2, 1776. However, it wasn’t edited and finalized by the Continental Congress until July 4, 1776. It was signed on August 2, 1776.
False. Thomas Jefferson was one of five co-authors, joined by Ben Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston.
True. Due to the growing frustration of living with taxation and no representation, the Thirteen Colonies rebelled and went to war against Britain in the year prior to 1776. It wasn’t until 1776 that they formally declared their independence in writing.
Fireworks were used 1 year after the Declaration – on July 4, 1777 in both Philadelphia and Boston. According to the Pennsylvania Evening Post: “At night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.”
We hope you enjoy your holiday!
