Fall 2020 Enrollment Requirements for J-1 Exchange Visitor Students

Please see below for the Fall 2020 enrollment requirements for students with J-1 Exchange Visitor visa status. Note the differences among new students, continuing students in the US, and continuing students who will remain abroad for the Fall 2020 semester.

New Students (Fall 2020 is the first semester of study at CU)

  • Enroll in at least a one-credit class that has an in-person hybrid component.
  • After meeting the one-credit in-person hybrid, all classes can be online.
  • Enroll in the number of credit hours required by degree level (see below).

Returning J-1 Exchange Visitor Students (students who have completed at least one semester in J-1 status) who will be present in the US during Fall 2020:

  • Enroll in any of the class options offered for Fall 2020—there are no in-person requirements. 
  • Enroll in the number of credt hours required by degree level (see below).

Continuing J-1 Exchange Visitor Students (students who have completed at least one semester at CU in J-1 status) and who will not return to the US:

  • Enroll in online only classes from abroad
  • Enroll in the number of credit hours required by degree level (see below)
  • Students will maintain their J-1 visa status if they follow the enrollment requirements, even if they stay outside the US for the semester

Enrollment requirements based on degree level:

  • Bachelor’s students: At least 12 credits
  • Master’s/PhD students:  At least 5 graduate credit hours or a combination of 8 credit hours of graduate and undergraduate-level courses

This may change depending on graduate student registration status and level of course enrollment. Graduate School rules for full-time status apply.

Students are encouraged to discuss with their academic department how online classes only will affect their enrollment status and degree plan.
