Backing Out of Accepted Job Offers

Career Services recently received several complaints from employers about international students backing out of an accepted offer. The industry term for this is reneging. Reneging can unfortunately have far-reaching effects outside of one student impacting fellow students, university employer partners and, potentially, one’s career.

  • If multiple students from a particular school renege on their offers, the companies may choose to revoke funding or stop recruitment from that university altogether. This is detrimental to future students who may not have the same opportunity to be recruited by that company.
  • Reneging can have a negative impact on the international student population as a whole when a few international students renege on job offers with the same company.
  • By reneging, students can put organizations in a challenging situation to find a replacement, especially if this occurs after peak recruitment season.
  • Companies may also suffer financial losses if they have already paid for the candidate’s housing, relocation, etc.

Because of these impacts, Career Services has a policy that if a student reneges on an offer, his/her access to Handshake will be revoked until s/he meets with the Associate Director of Career Services to discuss the situation.

If you are considering multiple offers, please do not hesitate to discuss your options with a career advisor.
