Health Insurance Options

There are two ways students at CU Boulder can meet the health insurance requirement:

Anthem Gold

Anthem Gold Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

A plan exclusively for CU Students.

If you do not have private health insurance or want comprehensive coverage on and off campus, you can enroll in Anthem Gold SHIP.

This plan provides a full year of coverage for mental health and medical services on campus, as well as local and national coverage.

Enroll in the Anthem Gold SHIP for $1,988 per semester.

Private health insurance

If you already have health insurance coverage through an individual, family or employer plan, you must submit proof of insurance through an online waiver application and be approved.

CU Boulder Health and Wellness Services accepts most major insurance plans for care provided on campus and through telehealth.

If you choose to use your own insurance, we highly recommend purchasing BuffCare to minimize your out-of-pocket expenses on campus.

Supplemental coverage plan

The BuffCare Supplemental Coverage Program is available for students with private health insurance.

BuffCare Program

The BuffCare Program provides peace of mind by reducing out-of-pocket costs for medical services provided on campus after your primary insurance has been billed.

This is a great option for students who have high deductible, out-of-state or state-sponsored health insurance plans.

This includes illness prevention and treatment, injury care and other services provided at Wardenburg Health Center and at Health and Wellness Services in the Village Center at Williams Village.

Insurance coverage requirements

If a student enrolls in CU Anthem Gold SHIP, they will have a comprehensive medical insurance plan that meets insurance requirements set forth by CU and the federal government. However, if a student elects coverage under a different plan, it is recommended their health insurance meet the following requirements to ensure they have adequate coverage.

Health insurance plan coverage requirements
  • Essential health benefits: Plans must comply with essential health benefits as outlined on healthcare.gov.
  • Colorado coverage: If you are an out-of-state student, please contact your insurance carrier to confirm coverage in Colorado.
  • Coverage time frame: Coverage must be active the first day of classes and remain active throughout the academic year.
  • US-based company: The insurance company must be owned and operated within the United States.
  • Unlimited benefits: There is no limit or cap on the amount of money the insurance plan will pay in total benefits per year.

Pre-existing condition limits: Plans cannot have pre-existing condition limitations.
