Research Interests

I research the potential of India’s vast network of women’s self-help groups (SHGs) to women’s sense of agency and identity and the role of women's collective empowerment to poverty alleviation. I have previously conducted research on self-led anti-poverty SHG projects in West Bengal and subsistence farmer engagements with India’s National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, one of the government’s flagship anti-rural poverty programs, in Maharashtra. Drawing on feminist geography and political ecology approaches, I seek to better understand the intersections between bottom-up forms of women’s collective empowerment and sustainable resource use using qualitative methods.
