A trio of capital construction projects, along with various smaller projects, are slated to commence over winter break as crews work to take advantage of the quiet period on campus. Meanwhile, the new pedestrian bridge and pathway connecting Main Campus with areas north of Boulder Creek is expected to be open for use by the time students return for the spring semester.

Additions to the Imig Music Building and Ramaley Biology Building will both begin, along with a major renovation and building-systems upgrade to the west tower of the Fleming Building. This is in addition to a number of smaller projects that campus Planning, Design and Construction officials aim to complete, weather permitting, during the winter break down time.

A summary of the three large projects and their impacts to campus follows.

The Imig Music Building addition will include new rehearsal and recital facilities, new classrooms, a state-of-the-art recording studio and dedicated suites for the Entrepreneurship Center for Music and the Musicians' Wellness Program.

Imig Music Building addition

Slated for completion in summer 2020, this project involves the demolition of a portion of the south wing of Imig, followed by a 64,000-square-foot addition that will include new rehearsal and recital facilities, new classrooms, a state-of-the-art recording studio, dedicated suites for the Entrepreneurship Center for Music and Musicians' Wellness Program, and a new dance studio and theater classroom for the Theatre and Dance program.

Construction impacts include:

  • Construction trailers arrive the week of Dec. 26, with site fencing going up Jan. 2 and demolition work beginning soon after.
  • The portion of Wardenburg Drive between Imig and Wardenburg Health Center, which is currently closed for a water line project, will remain closed throughout the Imig project.
  • Construction staging will take place on the far west portion of Farrand Field.
  • Construction noise could at times impact nearby building users.
  • The bike racks on the south side of Imig and at the southwest corner of the building will be removed on Dec. 21 to accommodate construction. Bikes must be removed from the racks by end of day Dec. 20 or be subject to impound. Impounded bikes can be retrieved free of charge from East Campus by contacting the Environmental Center Bicycle Program at 303-735-BIKE or bicycle@colorado.edu.

Ramaley Biology Building addition

Targeted for spring 2020 move-in, this project includes a three-story addition to the Ramaley building that will provide the Integrative Physiology program—the second largest undergraduate major on the CU Boulder campus—with new state-of-the-art research facilities.

Construction impacts include:

  • Site fencing goes up Dec. 21, with initial work to relocate underground utilities beginning soon after.
  • Sewall Field will be closed throughout the project for construction site staging.
  • The portion of Pleasant Drive along the south side of Sewall Field will also be closed throughout the project. The main pedestrian detour will route pedestrians along the east, north and west sides of Sewall Field.
  • Construction noise could at times impact nearby building users.

Fleming tower renovation

Slated for completion in early 2020, the project is a renovation of the west tower of the Fleming Building and also includes critical building-system upgrades to the central portion of the building, including HVAC and data systems.

Construction impacts include:

  • Site fencing goes up, and work begins Jan. 2.
  • The south entrance to the west tower will be closed to accommodate construction staging on the south side of the building.
  • A temporary ADA entrance will be in place at the north entrance of the west tower during the project.
  • Construction noise could at times impact portions of the building that are not part of the renovation project, including the classrooms on the first floor of the building.

Smaller projects

In addition to the larger projects, the following smaller projects are also scheduled to take place over winter break. Updates on these projects can be found on the campus Cone Zone webpage.

  • Imig curb/crosswalk: This project includes reconfiguration of the curb in front of the main entrance to Imig in order to install new crosswalks across 18th Street toward both the Center for Academic Success and Engagement and Parking Lot 204.
    • Weather permitting, work is slated to begin Jan. 2 and take about 10 days to complete.
    • Traffic along 18th Street will be reduced to one lane, with flaggers maintaining two-way traffic flow.
  • CASE sidewalk: This project includes repaving a portion of the sidewalk running along the north side of the Center for Academic Success and Engagement, as well as the north-south connection between CASE and the Visual Arts Center, to address drainage and ADA issues.
  • Wardenburg Drive water line: The project, which began earlier this fall, includes installation of new water lines.

New pedestrian bridge

Barring weather setbacks, the new pedestrian bridge and pathway across Boulder Creek will be open for use in early January. The Boulder Creek path detour will remain in place while the old 21st Street bridge is removed and the permanent creek path route is repaved.

The new bridge and raised path will provide an ADA-accessible connection from the Boulder Creek path to Main Campus, and will be a dismount zone for bikes, skateboards and scooters.
