Dear Addie: I'm not getting along with my roommate

Dear Addie, I can't stand my roommate. Like literally she is so annoying and disrespectful. She borrows my clothes without asking, eats my food and is always making noise when I am trying to study. I can't just switch my roommate, so any advice on what I should do? - Frustrated Faith

Dear Faith, I have to agree, this definitely sounds frustrating. It's tough enough to jump right into living with someone before getting to know them, but add on the issues you are experiencing and it can get a bit hairy.

Thankfully, you have some options here. I would start by talking to her about it. It's possible she has no idea that her habits are driving you nuts! If the two of you can chat about what you are feeling, she may be open to changing. You can work on creating roommate expectations, which may help you set a solid framework for moving forward.

But keep in mind, as you bring up what is bugging you, it's important to be open to listening to her side. You might be surprised to find that you do things from time to time that make her just as frustrated. Really, if the two of you don't talk about it, how in the world are you going to fix it? Just remember, conflict (especially roommate conflict) is normal. So normal in fact, that you can take a quiz to find out your conflict style. Who doesn't love a good quiz!?

If worse comes to worse, you can always reach out to Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution for help. This office is one that can not only help you with a current roommate conflict, but also conflict coaching, meditation services and more.

Good luck with your roommate Faith, I hope the two of you can find some middle ground and flourish this semester!
