Message from the EVEN Director

Boulder, Fall 2015

Message from the EVEN Director, Professor R. Scott Summers

I would like to share some recent news about our Environmental Engineering Program with you.

First, I would like to welcome our new EVEN first year undergraduate students. More than 60 new students have joined our EVEN program with female student making up more than 60% of the class! On behalf of the EVEN team we wish all of you the best success in your studies and we are here to facilitate that success.

Recently, our Environmental Engineering Undergraduate program has climbed in the U.S. News & World Report s rankings to 13th in the nation and 7th among public universities. This peer recognition rewards the hard work of our faculty, staff and students. Congratulations to all of you!

The EVEN program strives to create new ways for assisting our students’ achievements. For example, this is the second year of our Student Mentor Program which connects our first-year students with our senior students. The senior mentors stay in communication with the freshman to offer them the resources and help that they need for success. Thanks to the seniors for volunteering their time!

Earlier in 2015, the CU Board of Regents approved the creation of a Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in environmental engineering.  Our new graduate programs include 22 primary faculty members, and covers topics include natural systems, air quality, water, wastewater and water reuse treatment and engineering for developing communities. These focused degrees will help prepare students for careers in the protection of human health from environmental factors, as well as the protection of the environment from the effects of human activities. The new graduate program will begin to admit new students next semester.

To continue building our academic capacity, we have recently welcomed two new EVEN faculty members from the Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) Department:  Michael Gooseff, Associate Professor, and Joseph Kasprzyk, Assistant Professor.

In addition, three EVEN Professors were recently promoted: Professor Daven Henze from Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Professor Fernando Rosario-Ortiz from CEAE, recently achieved tenure and promotion to Associate Professor. Professor Shelly Miller from ME achieved promotion to full professor. Congratulations to them!

Finally, the Mortenson Center in Engineering for Developing Communities new leadership includes two EVEN Professors. Professor Karl Linden has accepted the new co-director position and will lead expansion of graduate education and research initiatives. Professor Rita Klees will expand her previous teaching and advising responsibilities, and develop strategic partnerships.

We are creating a bright future for students in our CU-Boulder’s Environmental Engineering Program!
