Damien AllenCareer Area: Software Development - Additive Manufacturing.

Degree earned at CU Boulder and year: BS, Environmental Engineering, 2012.

Title and name of the company Icurrently work for: Lead Software Developer, MX3D.

A little about my career path: After graduating from the EVEN faculty with a water focus, I moved to The Netherlands and obtained a MSc in Civil Engineering concentrating on catchment hydrology and remote sensing from the Delft University of Technology. The first step in my career was working for a startup creating software for (ground)water level monitoring, rainfall measurement, and drinking water metering using mobile apps augmented by computer vision and AI. This role gave me experience working closely with Dutch water authorities (waterschappen), drinking water companies in southern Africa, and within international consortiums. I then transitioned into metal additive manufacturing where I currently lead software development at MX3D in Amsterdam. While I have shifted from my environmental engineering roots, I take solace in the fact that our technology enables efficient metal manufacturing using robots and electric welding machines in an industry traditionally dominated by more wasteful casting and milling.

List of topics students can ask me about: Software for water management, transitioning into software development, (Dutch) polder hydrology, studying abroad.
