Viola and Charles Haertling Scholarship Fund in Environmental Design

The Charles Haertling Scholarship is available to a continuing, full-time junior or senior architecture student who demonstrates academic merit and relative financial need.

This scholarship was established to perpetuate the memory of Charles A. Haertling, AIA Architect, and celebrates Haertling's commitment to humanistic ideals in both the arts and design as well as the spirit of community service.

Dana Giffin Soper Memorial Scholarship

The Dana Giffin Soper Memorial Scholarship is available to a continuing, full-time, junior at the time of the award. Qualified applicants must demonstrate excellent academic performance, as well as exemplary personality and character.

Candidates should also be poised to make future contributions to the Program and design professions. Financial need is not a consideration. This scholarship was established in memory of Dana Giffin Soper, a former ENVD student.

D.J. Hynek Memorial Scholarship

The D.J. Hynek Memorial Scholarship is for an undergraduate student enrolled full-time in the Program facing personal hardships—financial, medical, familial, etc.—that are deterring the student's ability to maintain full-time enrollment.

This scholarship is awarded in memory of D.J. Hynek, an ENVD student who graduated with an architecture emphasis in 2000. Hynek found the ENVD Program exceptionally meaningful and supportive of his intellectual interests and career ambitions.

Hideo Sasaki Scholarship in Interdisciplinary Design

The Hideo Sasaki Scholarship in Interdisciplinary Design benefits an outstanding undergraduate student demonstrating financial need and academic achievement entering his/her final year in any ENVD major.

This scholarship was established by the University’s Board of Regents to honor Hideo Sasaki’s exemplary efforts as a teacher and design practitioner to inspire future generations of ENVD students to higher levels of achievement.

Douglas Darden Memorial Scholarship

The Douglas Darden Memorial Scholarship is for an ENVD student and Colorado resident who demonstrates great professional promise, academic merit, and financial need.

Douglas Darden was a highly gifted and internationally recognized architect and teacher who served on the University of Colorado faculty. Darden’s parents established the Memorial Scholarship in his name in 1996 after he passed away from leukemia.

Marcia Miller Memorial Scholarship

The Marcia Miller Memorial Scholarship was created to provide financial assistance to a married ENVD student with demonstrated financial need in her or his second, third, or fourth year.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Housing Prize Scholarship

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Housing Prize Scholarship provides annual scholarships to undergraduate environmental design students at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The scholarship is known as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Housing Prize in order to perpetuate the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to encourage adequate housing for low income and disadvantaged students.

The ENVD Scholarship Committee awards the Housing Prize based on expressions of interest in affordable housing as indicated in students’ scholarship application essays and supporting materials.

The Colorado Garden Foundation Merit & Need Scholarship

The Colorado Garden Foundation is proud to offer its scholarship programs from proceeds generated from the annual Colorado Garden & Home Show and Colorado Fall Home Show, to provide financial aid to students enrolled in the Program in Environmental Design.

Qualifying applicants should:
  1. Be enrolled at the Program in Environmental Design at the University of Colorado Boulder
  2. Have declared landscape architecture as their ENVD major
  3. Be at least in their sophomore year at the time of application with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  4. Demonstrate financial need.

The ENVD scholarship committee will select eight applications meeting the above qualifications for submission to the Colorado Garden Foundation. Application materials for consideration include personal statements, responses to writing prompts, resumes, and design portfolios. The Foundation will recommend two awardees from the applicant pool for dispersal in the following academic year.

Environmental Design Awards

ENVD Academic Paper Award

Instructors nominate environmental design student papers with a minimum of five pages. Instructors submit nominations to the ENVD Scholarship Committee via Anna Parsons for consideration.

ENVD Research Award

The Environmental Design Research Award is meant to financially assist with senior-level ENVD honors and capstone projects. For consideration, students should submit a one-page maximum description of the project they plan to undertake. The description must specify exactly how the award will support students’ research efforts.

Architectural Education Fund, AIA Colorado Scholarships

C. Gordon Sweet Scholarship (Colorado AIA)

The Architectural Education Foundation (AEF) of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Colorado makes the C. Gordon Sweet Scholarship available to a third or fourth year ENVD student who shows promise of contributing to the design/building industry.

C. Gordon Sweet was a prominent Colorado architect and two-time President of AIA Colorado. His practice spanned twenty-five years from 1946 - 1970 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Colorado North Chapter Scholarship (Colorado AIA)

The Architectural Education Foundation (AEF) of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Colorado’s North Chapter offers a scholarship to an ENVD student based on financial need, the pursuit of architectural education, and contribution to the ENVD program.

DeVon M. Carlson Scholarship (Colorado AIA)

The Architectural Education Foundation (AEF) of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Colorado offers the DeVon M. Carlson Scholarship to an ENVD architecture student preparing to enter their first year of study toward the Master of Architecture degree in the following academic year at the University of Colorado Denver.

DeVon M. Carlson was a dedicated architectural educator and professional. He was the first Dean of the College of Architecture at CU Boulder and the first President of AIA Colorado in 1968-69 and again in 1980. First presented in 2005, the Carlson family and their colleagues established the scholarship to award an exceptional fourth-year undergraduate student who demonstrates exceptional hand drawing skills. The applicant must also demonstrate financial need and be a Colorado resident.

The Gary G. Landin AIA Scholarship (Colorado AIA)

The Gary G. Landin AIA Scholarship has been offered since 1999 to assist an undergraduate ENVD student demonstrating exemplary academic merit and financial need.

Gary G. Landin, AIA, was a co-founder of Intergroup Architects and a respected Colorado architect. He practiced in Denver from 1956-1998. This scholarship is presented by Intergroup Architects and his family to honor his memory.

Kenneth R. Fuller FAIA Scholarship for Graduate Study (Colorado AIA)

First presented in 1984, the AEF awards this scholarship to a graduating undergraduate ENVD student continuing graduate study at the University of Colorado Denver for the following academic year. The scholarship is based on academic excellence, professional promise, and contributions to ENVD.

Kenneth R. Fuller, FAIA, is a respected third-generation Colorado Architect who served as a Director of AIA Denver and was the permanent Secretary and Treasurer of the Architectural Education Foundation (AEF) for thirty-two years. Kenneth R. Fuller practiced Architecture with his father and brother from 1946 to1966 and maintained his office until 1998. He was also recognized as “Architect of the Year” in 1989.
  • One scholarship is awarded annually.

Oscar R. Sanchez Scholarship (Colorado AIA)

The Oscar R. Sanchez Scholarship was founded in 2009 to introduce underserved students in the local metropolitan community of Denver to the art and profession of architecture. The award opens the opportunity to learn about architecture by fostering a love of exploring architecture and culture by directly introducing the recipient to the architectural profession.

The goal of the scholarship is to help increase the odds for achievement by providing opportunities to establish connections within the profession. It is awarded based on performance, disadvantaged status, and demonstrated financial need.
