Tips for a Successful Application

The Basics

Be a good student
Have a good GPA
- If it’s not stellar, tell us why or why not
Get involved
- ENVD and CU student clubs and organizations
- Participate in and attend guest lectures
Know that financial need is not necessary for all awards
Scholarship awards and recognition are great resume builders with specific awards distributed to all levels of ENVD students

The Application

If you’re planning to apply only for ENVD scholarships, you may elect to not complete the standard essay questions on the General CU application. All other information on the General Application should be completed.
Be sure to provide the highest studio you completed during your fall semester
Answer questions honestly and thoughtfully
For the Crowther Award: If you answer YES, please address in the text block that you are interested and how you will use the funds to support your interests in environmental architecture, sustainable building, solar energy, energy conservation or therapeutic architecture
As you complete your application, focus on sharing your unique story
- How might you use the funds?
- How will they decrease your financial stress?
- Give details that are unique to your personal situation or describe hardships that may be affecting you (and education)
Select great references to support you and your application
- Studio instructors (be sure to ask them and share why this is important to you)
- Staff that you work directly with
- The scholarship committee recommends not using high school teachers or former supervisors for this application

Portfolio Guidance

When curating your work, select 4 to 5 projects and keep your portfolio between 20 to 30 pages. Export a multipage PDF document as spreads for submission
- Focus on the content you’re providing, not the way in which you provide it
- Your portfolio should include all aspects of your work. Do not only highlight your final renderings. Provide insight on how you achieved your final design with your process work
- Order projects by your best, most accomplished work first. It does not need to be chronological
Know that your portfolio will be fairly evaluated in comparison to your ENVD level peer group
A website portfolio is OK to submit
- Use a simple layout or template
- Be sure to publish your site

Mark this date on your calendar
November 1 is when the scholarship application opens. Current students can apply through the financial tab in your Buff Portal.

Deadline
February 15 is when the application closes. Applicants must also complete the FAFSA for scholarships with financial need criteria and eligibility requirements.

Diverse Scholars

In collaboration with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement, Diverse Scholars offers a limited number of participation scholarships each year to incoming students. Awards are granted at $1500 per academic year ($750/semester) for four years. Awards are evaluated at the end of each year and renewed annually based on member participation and academic performance. The DWB scholarship application opens in the spring.

Eligibility

Eligibility for participation scholarships is determined by:

Financial need
Statement of intent
Academic performance

Acceptance and enrollment into the Program in Environmental Design
Demonstrated commitment to extracurricular activities

Participation requirements

Students accepted into the DWB scholarship program are required to sign a participation agreement that outlines their commitment to participate in programming activities as well as strive towards academic excellence. Scholarships and future involvement are contingent on participation and maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Creating paths to success

The Diverse Scholars program is home to Environmental Design students involved in one or more of the following academic scholarship programs in order to engage students and integrate with campus and community partners to build community, provide a social and academic support system, and foster persistence and retention through a wide array of programming activities.
