ADA Accommodation & Compliance Process
All employees need to understand their legal obligations to their employees and students who request reasonable accommodation under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). In accordance with the ADA, an individual with a disability is a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities such as breathing, eating, sleeping, walking, talking, manual tasks, etc. Examples of reasonable accommodations in the workplace and academic setting include:
Making existing facilities readily accessible to and usable by persons with disabilities
Modifying work schedules
Acquiring or modifying equipment or devices
Testing accommodations, such as extended time
Distraction-reduced environments such as a separate room, and use of a word processor
Auxiliary aids such as braille, note takers, interpreters, readers, assistive listening devices, and captioning
At the University of Colorado Boulder, individuals with disabilities are entitled to access, support, and when appropriate, reasonable accommodations. ADA Compliance is responsible for providing disability-related information, services, and resources to staff, faculty, and visitors, including the provision of workplace accommodations. ADA Compliance upholds its mission to promote equal access and opportunity for those with disabilities by educating the campus community and by partnering with campus departments to address ADA needs across the university.
