Playbooks and Problem Sets: A Pilot Curriculum, Reimagining STEM through an Interdisciplinary Culturally Relevant Sports Curriculum

Angles displayed during catch of football

Lien Amin, CU PhD Student

This poster focuses on a curriculum this is for students to investigate/learn through a culturally centered phenomenon, in this case football. STEM content is centered around the use of drills/routes, data analysis, and film study to encourage participation in science and engineering practices through sport. This pilot curriculum proposes a transformative approach to STEM that centers identity, inquiry, and cultural affirmation co-designed by Black college athletes. By incorporating sports into STEM programs, the potential to connect new populations who were previously marginalized by stereotypes and marginalization, the potential for creating new pipelines into these populations becomes evident (Drazan, 2010).
