Jyotsna Raj

I was born and brought up in India, an idyllic childhood in many ways. I began to draw and paint at a very young age and as a self-taught artist I was deeply influenced by the diverse arts and crafts traditions of the culture I grew up in. There is so much beauty and color in India, both natural and crafted, that it was easy to begin to present it in my work.

When I came to live in America I continued to draw upon these influences but my new country introduced me to many art forms, such as the arts of the Native American culture, sometimes showing an uncanny resemblance to the arts of the indigenous peoples of India.

Art is a universal language and I believe it has helped me understand America and find companionship and empathy with the community I live in and encouraged me to be an activist in my neighborhood and in Boulder. This is what I wish to further in my career as an artist and as a citizen of the world.
