I am an American citizen that has lived and grown up overseas due to my parents military service. I moved to Belgium at the age of 5 and lived there until I finished eighth grade. I have lived in and traveled all over Europe with my family. I visited over 12 countries and was able to experience the customs, traditions and culture all around me. I attended a school on a NATO military base and had classmates which represented over 30 countries. My classmates taught me about their home cultures by introducing me to their favorite foods, teaching me games from the home countries and teaching me words and phrases from their home languages. I moved to Japan right before I started high school. I have traveled all over Japan and Asia. I have been active in several clubs that work and learn along side students from local Japanese schools through sports, competitions and cultural exchange days. The clubs include Japanese I, Japanese II, Soroban Competition Club, Harvard Model Congress, Mu-Alpha Theta, Varsity Tennis, and Varsity Baseball. I have taken 2 years of formal Japanese language and I have practiced informal Japanese for 4 years. Growing up overseas in three different cultures has given me a world view and an understanding that although people are different, we are also very similar. I hope to live and study with people that want to use their education to make the world a better place.
The person that I would want to live down the hall from would be someone that has lived or spent time in another country. Someone that has a global view of the world, an open mind, and that wants to use their knowledge and education to make the world a better place for everyone. I would hope to live along side others that may have a broader world experience by having visited, lived or spent time in other countries and is open to learning and experiencing other cultures. I am open and interested in learning about new languages and cultures. I want work with and beside others that bring different points of view and different experiences to the table. Having grown up overseas living in and attending school in the United States will be a new experience for me. Living and studying along sides others with similar experiences will give me a feeling of community with my peers with same goals and interests.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder because I am interested in helping to solve social issues on a global level. I want to use my engineering degree to solve real world problems such as proving access to clean water and sustainable low cost living solutions to those in need. I believe that living with and working along side others with this same vision will allow us to collaborate, share and exchange ideas, knowledge and solutions to help solve these worldwide concerns. I believe that a world view that is open to ideas and collaboration will improve life for everyone. I am hoping to bring my experience and knowledge of having lived and learned in 3 different cultures to the Global Engineering RAP. I am excited to learn with others that share the same experiences and vision that I have for helping to create real world solutions.
