The only experience I have ever had travelling abroad was travelling to Germany with a school sponsored trip. The trip was about a week, and we went to Berlin, Munich, and took a day trip by bus to New Neuschwanstein Castle. I believe this helps me prepare for the global RAP because the trip allowed me to gain an appreciation for culture and language. Though I do not want to learn German as a language, I still appreciated the connections I could make between English words and German words. The same way I can pick out words from Spanish or Italian that are the same word. I always love learning new vocabulary from any language as learning a language has always interested me. I also love learning about the culture behind a language because that culture is often deeply tied to both the language of the country as well as the history of that country. English, as an example, is such a weird language because old Britain got invaded constantly, and every time they got invaded, some of the invader's language got incorporated into old English. Finding connections between language and culture is always interesting because it often explains odd or interesting aspects of the culture or language that would otherwise be unexplainable. Another reason I enjoy learning about the culture of a country is because learning about that culture should include enjoying the local cuisine of that culture. In the case of the German trip, I enjoyed eating pretzels and sausage at local restaurants when we got free time. The cuisine of a culture will tend to talk about what resources were available in that region and how creative the people there could get with those resources. It could even show what the purpose of the food was, like if the food was easily transported it would probably be for a working-class person who needed to have a mobile source of nutrition. These experiences have all given me a love and interest in language and culture that I hope to experience more of in the Global Engineering RAP.
I think the biggest trait that I would want from someone living down the hall from me would be that they do not wake me up at unreasonable hours of the night, they can do whatever they want as long as it does not wake me up. It would also be nice if the person living down the hall shared my interests because then it would be much easier to strike up a conversation with them and make a new friend. Having them as a friend would also give me another person that I can get study help from for homework or tests. I would also like it if a person living down the hall from me keep their room mess contained to their room, if they are a messier person. It would also be nice if the person living down the hall from me would foster a spirit of community within the dorm or the floor, as community is a great way to meet people with similar interests or similar classes for study help. A person living down the hall from me should also be willing to offer help themselves to those who need help, whether that be academic or otherwise. I would also want the person living down the hall from me to be willing to just talk, not just about academics or school, even if we do not share common interests. I basically just want the person living down the hall from me to be kind, respectful, and approachable as both a friend and tutor.
I would like to be part of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder mostly because of the tutoring and help that is available either officially or unofficially. The study groups available between students is what I am largely interested in as student to student studying is much more relaxed and calmer than teacher to student tutoring. Other students could also have tricks that they personally figured out that they can share with other students, including me. The student study groups would also be a great place to meet the people in my dorm and get to know them better, as I will likely have classes with most of them for the majority of my time at CU Boulder. The RAP classes offered will help me because they would allow me to have less wasted time going from class to class and lessen the feeling of needing to rush around campus. The smaller class size of the RAPs would also help get my questions answered faster and better and likely provide more opportunities to meet with the teacher one on one if I need extra help. I would personally contribute to the community by offering help to other students when they request help or if they look like they might be struggling on a problem that I know how to do. I will also help by trying to keep the dorms and common areas clean so everyone can enjoy the dorms and no one has to deal with any trash or dirt and be as good of a neighbor as possible to my fellow students.
