Throughout my life, I have frequently traveled to Canada. I have dual citizenship between the two countries and my extended family lives there. Because of this, I was exposed to different cultures in the two countries as well as moving between several states. I was planning to travel internationally but due to COVID-19, I was unable to do so.

When I traveled to Canada, I saw how people would act differently from what I was accustomed to. When I traveled home, I decided I wanted to learn more about different cultures and beliefs. I began to constantly ask those around me to share their opinions on different topics and to tell me about their family’s culture. I believe that if you are better informed, you can make your own opinions in a more educated manner. For example, a large issue in Texas at the moment is abortion. I have several friends who are pro-life and pro-choice. I have not fully formulated my own opinion on the issue so I ask them to share their opinions on the matter and why they feel their side is correct. By doing this, I am honoring both sides of an issue and forming my own opinion in a more respectful way.

In 2019, a figure skater from Italy lived with us for a month so that she could train in Houston. She spoke little English and it was her first time coming to America. When she lived with my family, I was able to learn more about Italian culture and how it differs from America. I enjoyed our talks, even if some of them happened through google translate, and she even taught me some Italian. Through this, I learned more about other cultures and traditions. After having an inside look into the culture of two countries, I wanted to travel to Asia or Europe to learn more about the culture. Sadly, COVID-19 made it impossible for me to travel internationally so I was unable to do so. I hope in this program I can reach greater knowledge about other countries and be able to travel to them during my college career.
During my life, I have always noticed I gravitate towards those who work hard towards their goals. Regardless of whether they work hard at school, in sports, or other extracurriculars, seeing someone with a similar work ethic as my own encourages me to work harder. I enjoy talking and working towards our different ambitions together.

Since I was young, my parents have encouraged me to try anything I find interesting. They also told me not to try it unless I was willing to work hard at it. Because of this, I have a long line of different sports and activities that I have tried. In every single one of them, I worked hard to not let down my teammates in sports and academic clubs and to not let down myself in individual sports or in my classwork. Now after finding the activities I enjoy, I work hard so that I can improve at them. Since I have a strong work ethic, I would want people around me to also have one. This way, we can both support each other’s aspirations. Have you ever had a friend that you feel that the second they start talking to you that you won’t be able to focus anymore? Or perhaps have you ever experienced the opposite where you know that if you want to study efficiently, you need to have a certain friend be your study buddy. When I am trying to focus, I rather be around the latter. I tend to work harder when I know others around me are also working hard to reach their goals. Whether their target is to be a well-known musician, a talented rock climber, or well known in academia for research work, I want to have some living down the hall from me who is working hard towards their goals in life.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder because I want to broaden my horizons.

One of the Global Engineering RAP’s goals is to help empower its students to use the skills they learn in engineering to improve the lives of those in poverty. I have always enjoyed helping others. Since I was 13, I have been teaching kids to play hockey and how to skate. In Texas, there is very little female representation in the sport which caused conflict when I was younger and did not know how to respond to my teammate telling me that I don’t deserve to be on the team because of my gender. As I grew older though, I realized that their opinion did not matter. Now being a coach for the next generation of hockey, I am able to instill a new belief that everyone deserves to be able to play hockey into hockey’s youth. I hope through the Global Engineering RAP, I continue to find ways to help people in new ways.

Engineers find themselves constantly doing science and math-based classes which can cause some to forget their morality. This can have devastating effects as seen by the nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011. The Global Engineering RAP would allow me to make sure that I do not forget that I am working on a project so I can help improve someone’s life, not just to further our knowledge. Some people joke that those hoping to join the space industry want to just leave behind their own world and find another planet to inhabit. I do not want that to become a mindset I have and this program would give me opportunities, such as introducing me to historical causes and present conditions of global inequality, would help ensure that did not happen. Engineers can work collaboratively to find evidence for solutions that the Earth is currently suffering under, such as discoving a better disaster recovery systems so that fewer lives are lost.

I plan to contribute personally to this residential community by bringing more diversity and by also participating in the Women in Stem activites. As someone who is a dual citizen in Canada and America, I was lucky enough to grow up around two different cultures and grow diverse opinions because of it. I also currently plan to take a Japanese minor so I could bring more knowledge about Japanese culture and language to the residence. The first occasion that made me consider getting a Japanese minor was during my freshman year of high school in World Geography. Their history is very interesting and unique compared to other modern advanced countries. In World History, I got to take a deeper look at how they evolved. By taking a Japanese minor, I hope to educate myself further about the history and culture of Japan as well as their language.
