At the end of each year in Middle School, from sixth to eighth grade, our school would take a week-long trip to Costa Rica, where we would spend the week immersed in Costa Rican culture. We would stay with a native host family, speak Spanish, explore our surroundings, and learn how to adapt and fit into a culture completely different from our own. These experiences have given me a solid understanding of the Spanish language, as well as introduced me to a culture other than the one I experience here in the United States. It also made me realize how much more I have to learn about the language even after years of study. These trips have inspired me to learn as many languages as possible in my lifetime.
An ideal neighbor for me is someone who comes from an entirely different background than me because I want to learn as much from them as I can. I would love them to be dedicated to their college education; going to class, paying attention, and planning to succeed. It would be great if they were really neat and organized because I am the complete opposite (I will try to do better in college though). I would like them to be outdoorsy, open-minded, funny, and willing to try anything. It would also be great if they could speak Spanish or Chinese so we could practice together.
I would love to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder because I consider foreign languages to be an extremely important part of my education during college. I also plan on keeping learning new languages a large part of my life as a whole, which I think the Global Engineering RAP would do an excellent job of. I've spent enough time outside of the United States to realize how much a language defines and shapes culture, so to have an opportunity to focus on and practice my language skills during college means a lot to me. Learning a new language always forces me to think in new or unexpected ways, so it relates very closely to my work in Computer Science. Learning to think creatively can open up new opportunities or avenues of innovation when coding, designing, or implementing programs. Additionally, being able to share my interests with others in a different language is quite fun for me. Holding casual conversations, learning about others, and exploring new things in my community are made much more fun by speaking Spanish the entire time. I plan to contribute to my community by spending as much time as possible speaking any language other than English, whether that be Spanish, Chinese, Russian, or French. I am going to college to learn, and learning new languages inspires me in ways that few other things manage to.
