I haven’t really traveled anywhere. I grew up in a family that travels very little, and when we do travel it is within the continental United States. I am scheduled to go on a trip to Europe over the summer and look forward to the experiences that the trip will provide me.
While I do not have personal experience with travel or study abroad, I have learned a lot about different cultures and living circumstances around the world in the classes I have taken throughout my education. I also have been learning about Spanish language and culture since kindergarten and have taken engineering classes throughout high school that have given me insight into the lives of people in less developed countries, as well as what is being done and what can be done to improve infrastructure and living conditions in those nations.

The person I would want to live down the hall from me in the Global Engineering RAP would be someone who is totally different from me in experience and background. I want to meet a person who can give me a different perspective on life and who can teach me about concepts and ideas that I otherwise would have never learned about. I would want the person living down the hall from me to come from a different country, culture, or religious background and who would be willing to inform me about said background. I want to learn new things and share new experiences with the person who lives down the hall from me in the Global Engineering RAP.
Since I was little I have wanted to have a career that helps people, but for a long time I did not know what that career would look like. When I got to high school and took my first engineering class I realized I had found something that not only would allow me to help people, but is also something that I love to do and having the opportunity to participate in the Global Engineering RAP will give me the opportunity to see more in depth the ways that I can use engineering to help people and communities develop.
In addition to allowing me to pursue my goals of aiding people through engineering, the Global Engineering RAP provides an environment that caters to engineering students. A community such as this one provides a fantastic opportunity to meet new people from a variety of different backgrounds, but who share my academic and career interests. Living in the RAP allows me to live and learn with students who are pursuing similar paths and goals as me. I think that being surrounded by a community such as this one will enhance my ability to do high quality work, giving me the opportunity to acquire insight from my peers to help me improve my projects in ways that I would not have thought of.
Based on my experience with engineering courses in high school, I am well prepared to be a resource to my peers within the RAP, to help them generate creative solutions, improve their projects and be successful engineering students. I can also contribute leadership skills I learned as a student athlete, including how to motivate, encourage and work as a team to the RAP community. I intend to use what I know to help the people in my community and to be a person that others can rely on for help when they need it.
